Part 1:
Before you start working: Information on requirements for working in the maritime industry
In this section you will gain an understanding of some of the requirements needed for working onboard a ship.
This includes information on the following subjects:
- Our Company Policies
- Seafaring Medical (ENG1)
- STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) Safety training
- Seafarers Employment Agreement
- Our Uniform
- ISPS (International Ship and Port facility Security code)
- Application and personal information forms
Please read through the rest of the sections on this page. We would ask that you undertake the ISPS e-learning training as soon as possible. We also require your ID card application and uniform sizes as early as possible so that we can process the applications as quickly and efficiently as possible. It is essential that we receive your banking details as quickly as possible so that we can set you up on our payroll system.
The maritime industry is heavily legislated and as such we have to comply with health, safety and security laws. Our policies are in place not only to comply with our legal obligations, but also to protect our employees. Failure to comply may not only be a breach of company policy but may also break the law.
Please click on the link to view our policy booklet.
You will be taken through the policies as part of your induction day, but here you can familiarise yourself with our policies and your personal responsibilities within them.
To enable you to work at sea, you must have a valid medical certificate for seafarers, this is called an ENG1. This is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) approved doctor and usually needs to be renewed every two years. You must carry the original certificate with you when you step on board. As a new employee, your ENG1 appointment will be booked for you and all information emailed to you. Your ENG1 will be paid for by Stena Line.

When you need to renew your medical certificate you must book this for yourself, payment for this can be claimed back via our expense form.

The original certificates (Medical and STCW) should always be carried onboard, these include but are not limited to:

Identification Documents
On board the ships, you must always carry a valid passport.
SEA (Seafarers Employment Agreement)
When you are on board and working, you should always be able to present a current employment contract. You get issued this from your line manager (OSSM/Master or Chief Engineer) on board when you start working. There are two copies and you will be asked to sign both, one which you retain and one which is retained by our manning/HR team. The SEA contains all your terms and conditions of employment so please keep it safe and secure.
Your Uniform
You will be provided with all the necessary uniform for your role on board. It is important to always have a clean, ironed and complete uniform in the workplace. You can order your uniform using the order form that can be found in the Forms section.
Your initial uniform allowance is listed in the attached document:
